Veteran's Lecture Series: Training Services Dogs to Support Soldiers with PTSD

Veteran's Lecture Series
Adults, Seniors Closed 5/1/2017 10:00:00 AM 8/31/2017 10:00:00 AM

While it’s widely known that service dogs can be trained to support men, women and children with disabilities like loss of sight or hearing, they are also being increasingly enlisted to assist soldiers returning from the battlefield who are suffering from PTSD. Studies show that a service dog may significantly help with some of the major symptoms of PTSD such as anxiety and fear, and improve overall quality of life. Additionally, a service dog can help remind the handler to take medication, wake the handler when they are experiencing a nightmare and serve as a buffer to calm a handler when they are experiencing distress in a crowded place. How does a cute little puppy get trained to take on such a vital and complex role? Susquehanna Service Dogs will share their techniques and success stories during this lecture. They’ll even bring a service dog-in-training along to demonstrate.
